UNFCCC CAPACITY Fellowship Programme 2025 in Bonn, Germany

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat is now inviting applications for the Capacity Award Programme to Advance Capabilities and Institutional Training in one Year (CAPACITY) Fellowship Programme 2025. This fellowship is designed to enhance local professional expertise and boost the institutional capacity of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in tackling climate change challenges.

This programme provides mid-career professionals, who are already serving in governmental roles within SIDS or LDCs, the opportunity to work and receive training at the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn for a period of one year (with the possibility of extending up to two years). Each fellow is selected individually, with the expectation that the training and skills gained will be applied within their home organizations, thereby strengthening their ability to address climate-related issues.

Objectives of the CAPACITY Fellowship Programme:

  • Support Climate Change Efforts: Assist developing countries in their efforts under the UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement.
  • Promote Cooperation: Foster bilateral and multilateral collaboration on climate change matters.
  • Strengthen Institutional Capacity: Enhance the capabilities of institutions in developing nations to engage effectively in global climate action.

Fellowship Vacancies:

Thanks to funding from the Governments of Italy and Portugal, the UNFCCC Secretariat is pleased to announce three CAPACITY Fellowship vacancies in the following divisions:

  • Transparency
  • Means of Implementation Division
  • Adaptation Division

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must:

  • Be currently employed in a governmental organization (at national, regional, provincial, or local levels), including educational institutions, research institutes, or ministries.
  • Hold citizenship in an eligible LDC or SIDS country (UN member countries only).
  • Be under 40 years of age at the closing date of the Fellowship Opportunity notice.

Additional requirements:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of at least one other UN official language.
  • This programme is not intended for students, nor does it support advanced degree pursuits (such as PhD fieldwork).
