Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) Internship Programme 2025-2027

Applications are now open for the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) Internship Programme 2025-2027. This programme provides an opportunity for unemployed graduates in Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET), Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), as well as Research, Development, and Innovation fields to:

• Gain practical work experience through mentoring and exposure
• Develop skills that facilitate entry into the job market
• Contribute knowledge and expertise to host institutions
• Acquire experience in research management, support, and administration within public higher education and research institutions

Benefits

Participants in the programme receive a monthly stipend for the entire 24-month duration, managed through the HSRC.

Eligibility

The programme is open to unemployed graduates who meet the following criteria:

• Must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with a valid South African identity document
• Must be 35 years old or younger at the time of appointment
• Must hold an NQF level 7 to 9 qualification from a higher education institution accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)

Host institutions

Host institutions should be within the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology (SET), Research, Development and Innovation, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Institutions must:

• Identify mentors who are employed on a permanent basis or a long-term contract of at least two years
• Ensure mentors are available to provide guidance, training, and support to interns
• Provide necessary infrastructure, such as workstations, computers, and remote work platforms, to facilitate practical work exposure
• Participate in mentorship forums and training sessions as part of the internship programme

Application

The internship runs for a period of 24 months. The application deadline is March 17, 2025.
