African Scholarship Programme 2026 at Nordic Africa Institute

If you are an early-career researcher based in Africa eager to expand your work in an international academic environment, the African Scholarship Programme 2026 at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) offers a unique opportunity. Selected scholars will spend two to three months in Uppsala, Sweden, conducting research in a resource-rich and collaborative setting.

What the Scholarship Covers

The programme provides generous financial and academic support to ensure a productive stay:

  • Return airfare (economy class) to and from Sweden.
  • Free accommodation during the scholarship period.
  • Daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD).
  • Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD).
  • Office space and computer access at NAI.
  • Access to NAI’s specialized Africa collection and Uppsala University libraries.

The research stay must last between 60 to 90 days. Note that periods when Nordic institutions are closed (15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January) cannot be included.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship is open to early-career African researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities focusing on Africa-related issues. Proposals should align with the UN Agenda 2030 and NAI’s research priorities.

You are eligible if you are:

  • A full-time staff member at an African university or research centre, enrolled in a PhD programme without international funding.
  • A postdoctoral researcher within four years of completing your PhD.

NAI encourages gender balance and research on gender issues and women’s position in society.
