YLAI Fellowship Program 2026: Applications Now Open for Young Entrepreneurs

The U.S. Department of State has launched the application round for the 2026 Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellowship. This fully funded program is designed for innovative entrepreneurs from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada who are looking to enhance their impact and expand their ventures.

Overview of the YLAI Fellowship Since 2015, YLAI has supported over 1,750 business professionals through leadership training, networking opportunities, and hands-on experience with U.S. organizations. The upcoming 2026 fellowship offers a four-week program in the United States and includes:

  • Business Placements: Fellows are paired with American businesses in their industry to work on their Entrepreneurial Leadership Action Plan (E-LAP).
  • Hybrid Learning Curriculum: Developed in partnership with Arizona State University and IREX, the program blends online modules with in-person instruction to strengthen leadership and technical knowledge.
  • Program Launch and Closing Forum: Activities begin with a welcome event and conclude in Washington, D.C., with a high-profile forum featuring government and business leaders.
  • Ongoing Engagement: After completing the fellowship, participants receive further mentorship and opportunities, including the chance to host their U.S. partners in their home countries via the Outbound Exchange Program.

If travel is restricted, the program will be held virtually to ensure participation.

Financial Support All expenses related to the fellowship are covered, including:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • J-1 visa support (dependents are not permitted)
  • Lodging and daily meal allowances
  • Health insurance during the fellowship
  • U.S. domestic travel associated with program activities
  • No fees to apply or participate

Who Can Apply To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be aged between 25 and 35 as of January 1, 2026
  • Be a citizen and resident of an eligible country*
  • Have at least two years of experience managing their own business
  • Not be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Meet the requirements for a J-1 visa
  • Be fluent in English and complete their application independently
  • Demonstrate commitment to community-focused entrepreneurship

*Eligibility extends to countries across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. Dutch nationals from Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten may also apply.

Selection Process Selection is based on entrepreneurial accomplishments, community involvement, leadership potential, and a strong alignment with the goals of the program. English proficiency will be assessed during interviews. Interviews for semifinalists are scheduled for July 2025, with notifications expected by August 2025.
